remembering Sterling Vaughan

Sterling Vaughan’s story is one of service, resilience, and long-overlooked honor. For decades, Irvington’s Veterans Memorial Plaza carried a painful inaccuracy—his name mistakenly engraved as “Stanley,” obscuring the legacy of Irvington’s first Black World War I veteran. Thanks to Commemorate’s research and leadership in correcting this record, Sterling Vaughan’s true name will now be permanently restored, ensuring his contributions are recognized with accuracy and dignity. His Veteran’s banner and biography appear below, offering a fuller picture of the man who served his country abroad while confronting inequality at home. In recognition of this historic correction and the community effort behind it, Mayor Burgos will issue a special commendation on Veterans Day 2026, honoring Sterling Vaughan’s rightful place in Irvington’s history.
